James Doute

LIMA — James L. “Jim” Doute, 65, of Lima, died at 6:58 p.m. Aug. 17, 2012, in the emergency room of St. Rita’s Medical Center.

He was born Oct. 18, 1946, in Lima to James M. and Virginia C. Rader Doute, who preceded him in death. On May 27, 1977, he married Judith A. “Judy” Steiner, who survives.

Mr. Doute retired after 39 years at the Husky Oil Refinery. He was an Allen County Veterans Service Commission Officer. He was an Air Force veteran of the Vietnam War stationed in the Philippines flying support missions. He was a past president and treasurer of the Vietnam Veterans of America LZ Lima, Chapter 89, where he was a life member. He was also a life member of American Legion Post 96, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1911 and AMVETS Post 1, all of Lima. He was an adviser to the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter at the Allen Correctional Institution and previously was the adviser for Chapter 261 at the Lima Correctional Institution. He was twice honored as the Vietnam Veteran of the Year by the Department of Ohio of Vietnam Veterans of America and was also selected as a Volunteer of the Year for Husky Oil Refinery.

He was a former member of Grace United Methodist Church, had formerly attended West Elm United Church of Christ and was attending Lima Community Church of the Nazarene. He was a 1996 graduate of the Allen Lima Leadership Class and a member of Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 370. He had been on the Allocations Committee of the United Way of Greater Lima. He was an avid photographer and loved to travel and spend time with his grandchildren. He was a 1964 graduate of Lima Senior High School, where he was a season-ticket holder for more than 40 years and was an avid fan of its athletics, especially basketball. He loved God and his country.

Survivors also include two children, Jason “Jay” (Heather) Doute and Jennifer “Jen” (Ryan) Smith, both of Lima; three granddaughters, Céline, Alyssa and Bren; two brothers, Jerome R. (Stephanie) Doute, of Wapakoneta, and Donald C. (Bonny) Doute, of Lima; a mother-in-law, Irene Steiner, of Lima; four brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Linda K. (Darhl) Worrell, of Russellville, Ark., Michael D. (Irma) Steiner, of Raleigh, N.C., Kathy L. (Karl) Hirn, of Lima, and Mark A. (Ing Wan) Steiner, of Fairfield; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services will begin at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Siferd-Orians Funeral Home. The Rev. Brian Romine will officiate. Entombment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery Mausoleum, with military rites by VFW Post 1275.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
