I was in Sarah's 6th grade class ar Roosevelt. She was a very nice little girl. She had a Braille typewriter and used it to take notes as I remember. I think she lived on Elm a block from Roosevelt . She found her way around Lima Senior by herself and was very calm and quiet.  I was always touched that throughout the years she recognized my voice.  I was very sorry to learn that she passed away.

Many discussions were held at our house as to how my father could teach Sarah  Geometry.  After many disucussions and us all putting our heads together it was decided that a tracing wheel used for sewing, because it would make a raised line could be used on paper and magnetic strips were used on the chalk board to make the shapes and/or lines needed.  I think the whole family felt a sense of accomplishment because we were able to help her with math.

I remember the slumber parties I attended with Sarah. She was fun to be with. She was always an inspiration.

Sarah and I were in the same Sundy School class at St. Lukes Lutheran Church.  I remember one Easter sunday I was sitting beside her and she asked if she could see my dress.  Now this seemed very strange to me, but of course, I said "Sure."  Sarah reached over and felt the skirt part of my dress.  She said she loved the flowers and named their colors.  I was shocked.  How in the world could a blind person see the pattern AND the color of my dress????  Sarah explained to me that she could feel the pattern and the colors.  I was amazed.

Sarah was an amazing person.

Sarah sang in our Spartanettes group, played the piano and guitar. I remember her playing guitar and singing "I Wonder as I Wander" one holiday season...an amazing person.

Personally, I never had any inneraction with Sarah but, seen and heard about her throughout our years at Lima Senior.  From all the things I ever heard about Sarah, she reminds me of Jonie Erareckson Tata, you're only handi-capped, if you choose to be, and you may quote me on that!

Sarah and I took swimming lessons together at the YMCA when we were about 10 or 11 yrs old and of course she was the best in the class! I don't know how she did it, but she sure swam better than anyone else in the class especially off the diving board. She was truly one of a kind and a great person.
